Foot Care for all Walks of Life

Foot Ulcers are generally a break-down of the skin on the bottom of the foot or over a boney prominence (i.e. Bunion).  They have many causes, but the most common are diabetes and vascular insufficiency.  These conditions should be taken very seriously.  Avoiding care can lead to infection or loss of limb.  Self treatment is not recommended for this serious condition.  Consultation with one of our podiatrist is a must.  Regular visits to your podiatrist for foot inspection, circulation testing, nail and callus care can prevent the breakdown of the skin.

Proper shoe gear and devices to keep excess pressure off of boney prominences can also prevent foot ulcers.  Appropriate footwear as well as many special pads to alleviate abnormal pressure can be found at the Foot Care Products Center.

Many ulcers can be slow to heal or become infected.  This can become a serious condition which can  result in loss of limb. Drs. Levine and Brown have vast experience healing chronic wounds and are board certified by the American College of Wound Management.

What Can I Do To Help Heal An Ulcer If It Occurs?
Many diabetic foot ulcers can be healed if identified and treated in time. Any blister, sore, cut or bruise on your feet that does not show signs of healing within a day or two, must be brought to the attention of one of our podiatrists immediately. Treatment may include:

  • Cleaning the wound (debridement) - One of our podiatrists may want to remove the outer skin and debris in the wound to encourage a supply of healthy blood helping the wound heal.

  • Treating the infection - If present, infection can be treated with antibiotics.

  • Circulator Boot - The circulator boot, a revolutionary new method of increasing blood flow to the foot and leg, which in turn, may rapidly increasing healing time.

  • Relieving pressure on the wound - devices like orthopedic shoes (shoe inserts), walkers, crutches, and wheelchairs can be helpful relieving pressure on the foot, allowing the wound to heal without any further damage. Our podiatrists will recommend the device that is right for you.

  • Dressing the wound - The latest research indicates that keeping the wound most and clean helps it to heal. Our doctors may recommend moist dressings such as saline or one of numerous wound care dressings like regranex.
