Foot Care for all Walks of Life
diabetics & general foot care
With the aging of the baby boomer population, the incidence of diabetic and vascular compromised patients is on the rise.  Lower extremity ulcers have become the most common problem treated in wound management centers.  Many foot ulcers can be prevented with regular visits to one of our podiatrists.  Early intervention in those patients who do develop ulcers can prevent costly and limb threatening progression of the ulceration.

As you may know:

  • There are more than 16 million diabetics in the United States (6% of the population).

  • About 25% of diabetics will develop a severe foot or leg problem in their lifetime.

  • About 15% of all diabetics will develop a foot ulcer in their lifetime.

  • 50% of non-traumatic major limb amputations are performed on diabetics

Our protocols emphasize:

  • Thorough history and lower extremity physical

  • Assessment of circulatory, biomechanical and neurological risk status

  • Regularly scheduled trimming of nails and calluses & corns

  • Patient education on diabetic foot problems and self-evaluation

  • Prescribing proper shoe gear and/or prescription orthotics to off-load areas at risk.

Diabetes doesn't have to lead to serious foot problems.  Your podiatrist, as part of your diabetic health care team, can work with you to keep your feet healthy and treat any problems that occur.

Diabetic Foot Problems

We Participate in the Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Program

Our Foot Care Products Center carries a full line of many styles and sizes of therapeutic and extra-depth shoes.  Diabetics meeting certain criteria can be properly fitted once a year with a pair of shoes.  Working in conjunction with our biomechanics lab, we are able to properly customize orthotics to off-load areas at risk, or to provide extra cushioning to help alleviate neuropathy symptoms.

Proper Daily Foot Care

Here's how to give your feet a healthy boost every day:

  • Wear comfortable shoes and socks that fit your feet

  • Wear shoes made of leather or canvas

  • Wear cotton socks

  • Wash your feet, dry them thoroughly (especially between the toes)

  • Keep your nails trimmed straight across

  • Keep skin smooth and supple with cream or lotion; rub rough spots away with pumice stone

  • Discuss proper foot care with your podiatrist

Many common foot and ankle problems may be alleviated by simple home remedies.  Should a problem worsen, cause intense pain, or last more than a few days, consult one of our Podiatric Surgeon at foot and Ankle Specialists immediately.  Individuals with medical conditions such as diabetes should receive regular examinations to ensure proper foot care.
